Head of Department (2008-14), Director of Research (2003-08) and currently Head of Graduate Studies. An architect and environmental design specialist, Koen was recently listed as one of the "top 50 most influential people in UK sustainability" by Building Design. His current work deals with the architectural and urban implications of environmental issues ranging from energy use to human comfort. He is Professor of Sustainable Design in the Department of Architecture, Professorial Fellow at Jesus College, and is a Director of Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd.

Research Interests

Koen's research activities are focused on the environmental performance of buildings and cities - with a particular interest in human perception and behaviour - which are the topics of funded research projects and his PhD students. Recent major funded research projects include:

Koen has over 170 outputs (with over three thousand citations), including 10 books ranging in subject matter from "Sustainable Urban and Architectural Design" (2006) to "Environmental Diversity in Architecture" (2004) and "Daylight Design of Buildings" (2002).
